A Word From the VP
Dear Colleagues,
I hope this semester is going well for all of you. I was delighted to start the semester with New Faculty Orientation (NFO), in person! It was great to meet our newest colleagues and introduce them to FSU and Tallahassee. Check out pictures from NFO and a link to the directory to help you get acquainted with them.
This issue of the newsletter contains lots of information about upcoming faculty development events and opportunities. The results of the COACHE Faculty Survey guided the development of many of these events (more information about the COACHE findings is available on the FDA website). Improving faculty mentoring was identified by the survey as an area in need of improvement. We are responding to this need by offering a variety of faculty workshops and events this year. One that I want to highlight is a workshop on November 4th by Dr. Joy Gaston Gayles, a national expert on faculty mentoring and part of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. This workshop focuses on maximizing faculty success at all stages of career. She presents a mentoring network model that is especially helpful to Assistant Professors working toward promotion and tenure as well as Associate Professors on the path to Full. And, for those of you who serve as mentors for faculty, I believe you will find this workshop offers models for you, as well. I hope to see you there.

Faculty development opportunities abound this semester. Be sure you make time for professional development by reserving your spot in one or more of this semester’s offerings.
Daily Writing
When faculty join a space to hold each other accountable for writing, they report finished projects, progress on research, and a sense that they are seen and supported by others walking a similar path. FSU has had a small faculty community of such writers since last spring. Consider joining our community.
Peggy Wright-Cleveland from the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement will host two Fall writing groups, one early morning and one mid-day, both open to faculty in any career stage. You may participate at any stage of the writing process and with any writing project (syllabus, article, grant proposal, book chapter, etc.). We gather, share our goals for the day's session, and write. Before we leave, we report on our progress. Both sessions will be hosted on Zoom. Drop-ins are welcome, but the practice is most effective when faculty make a regular commitment. Daily, weekly, or bi-weekly, the frequency of writing matters less than the commitment to a regular schedule. Reserve some of your precious Fall semester hours to face your writing tasks and join us.

New Faculty Deep Dive Discussions
This fall, new faculty are invited to gather and talk with established faculty about issues they confront every day.
On October 19, 11:30 – 1:00, new faculty will talk with Shanna Daniels, Lindsay Jenkins, Sara Hart, and Sonia Cabell, each bringing her own expertise regarding how to succeed in academia and maintain a healthy life beyond its walls along the way. It is a "Dutch treat" lunch at the Suwannee Room, but please RSVP so that we can have enough space reserved for the group.
On December 1, 11:30 – 1:00, new faculty will talk with experienced faculty led by Maura Scott about experiences with and strategies for diversity and inclusion. You can RSVP for both events on one form.

NCFDD Mentoring 101 Workshop Visits FSU Campus
On Friday, November 4, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, Dr. Joy Gaston Gayles from NCFDD will host an interactive workshop for faculty interested in mentoring or being more effectively mentored. This workshop is appropriate for all stages of a faculty career as mentoring needs simply change, they do not stop. Lunch will be provided but registration required.
Connections
We are excited to have Connections up and running post-pandemic. This mentoring network for faculty of color employs researched based strategies proven to develop faculty of color in a white majority university. If you are interested in joining, contact FDA-Connections@fsu.edu.
Faculty Celebrations
FSU welcomed over 130 new faculty in August. This distinguished group experienced FEAS training, Canvas training, the Course Design Institute, New Faculty Orientation, and the Research Mentor Academy. We encouraged them to have some fun, too. Make an effort to meet a new colleague in another department and give them a proper FSU welcome. We are excited about the work we will all do together.

Revised Academic Honor Policy
The revised Academic Honor Policy received the Board of Trustees' approval in July 2022. While the new procedures are similar to previous ones, there are a few updates worth noting:
- There are only seven charges/violations now; the former "Attempting" charge is inherently included in the remaining charges.
- “Administrative Case Resolutions” are permanently codified as possible options for resolving allegations.
- The four resolution options have simpler titles that state exactly what each pathway involves.
- Tied panelist votes during Academic Honor Policy hearings result in a "not responsible" decision/outcome.
- “Egregious” allegations are better operationally defined for both undergraduate and graduate students.
- The revised “Records” section outlines a process for potential early expungement of records for single–offense students (contingent upon instructor of records' approval). The four–person Appeals Committee has been replaced; a single Faculty Appellate Officer will facilitate appellate reviews.

The 2022-2023 Promotion and Tenure (P&T) process is well under way! eBinders are due to the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement (FDA) by Friday, October 14, 2022. Please check with your department and/or college P&T staff delegate for internal deadlines and submission requirements. More information regarding the P&T process can be found here.
SPECIALIZED FACULTY PROMOTIONS
The 2022-2023 Specialized Faculty Promotion process is also well underway. The deadline for deans or directors to submit electronic promotion materials (PDF files) to the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement (FDA) through Melissa Crawford is Friday, October 28, 2022. A Word from the Faculty Senate President
My thanks to all the faculty who volunteered through the annual spring service survey to work on the senate's standing committees. It was a busy summer naming faculty to the vacancies on these important faculty governance committees. These committees require over 150 faculty to serve on them, and about half needed to be filled this summer. Given the large number of volunteers for these seats, I and the senate steering committee made an effort to rotate new people into this service rather than reappoint current members. While we value the experience and continuity that returning members bring, we balanced this with the need to give everyone a chance to serve FSU.
If you did not get called to serve on a committee, there could be several reasons for this: we tend not to pick very junior faculty for this level of service work, some seats are specific to faculty from particular colleges, and sometimes there are dozens of volunteers for a single committee. If you did not get selected this year, I encourage you to continue to volunteer for these committee positions in the future.
You've probably noticed that campus is a busy place again. In-person classes, a new and busy student union, and very few parking spaces. While it's good to be getting closer to "normal" times, please continue to do your best to protect the health of yourself, your colleagues, and your students.
