My research explores the role of religious traditions in debates over ethics, politics, and culture. Since secular democracies are marked by a religious heritage, I think the study of religion clarifies the context of contemporary debates, and it offers resources anyone can draw on to address them.
My research focuses on understanding the causes of and developing treatments for addiction.
My interests are in rural health, health services and health outcomes research.
I identify effective teaching practices to support students struggling with academics and behavior.
I study ethics:—the norms, principles, relationships, and practices that people use in trying to live well. I focus on religious ethics, especially in disciplines of life like monasticism, and I also work in environmental ethics and the environmental humanities more broadly, with a particular interest in literary studies. My first book is Thoreau's Religion (Cambridge, 2021).
My research goal is to promote safe travel and ensure the health and well-being of tourists, organizations, and other key stakeholders within the tourism and hospitality industries. My expertise includes risk and crisis communication, tourist safety and security, and the role of social media in tourism. I am dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice in my field, contributing to safer and more resilient tourism practices.
