The Milton S. Carothers Faculty Lecture Series is the longest running, regularly occurring, interdisciplinary lecture series at Florida State University. Established in 1981 by the Rev. Carothers at the Presbyterian University Center (Westminster House), the series transitioned from the Faculty Luncheon Series to the Carothers Lecture Series in 2021 with an increased focus on interdisciplinary faculty research, community, and outreach.
The purpose of the series is to promote the research and creative activities of FSU's faculty in an interdisciplinary environment that translates those activities across boundaries to a broad audience with an eye toward bridging academic disciplines, facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations, and promoting faculty research, on and off campus.
The objectives of the series are that:
- Lectures are delivered by FSU faculty from disciplines all over campus;
- Lectures translate research and creative activities such that people from all disciplines can understand or connect with their practical or policy relevance;
- Lectures offer takeaways that have the potential to cross disciplinary boundaries to build new connections and promote interdisciplinary collaborations; and
- Lectures are presented in an engaging manner designed to stimulate interest and excite conversation.
The Milton S. Carothers Faculty Lecture Series is sponsored by the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement, the Office of Research, and the University Libraries. The series is coordinated by an interdisciplinary steering committee of faculty from colleges across campus.
