The Program for Emerging Leaders
The leadership program for “emerging leaders” is designed to support the leadership growth of those faculty at the Associate or Full-Professor levels. Participants in this program are nominated by their respective deans based on the nominee’s clear potential for leadership and service at FSU and beyond.
Program Purpose and Components
The FSU Leadership Development Program for Emerging Leaders, like other LDP offerings, is based in part on the philosophy that leadership development is an ongoing, never-ending process. As such, the program is designed to facilitate the continued growth of faculty members as leaders, and to assist them in identifying and accomplishing self-identified leadership goals over the course of an academic year. The program includes the following core components:
- Identification of each participant’s leadership goal for the year and beyond;
- At least two sessions of optional one-on-one leadership advising to facilitate the identification of a leadership goal;
- Biweekly video presentations, seminars and group discussions on topics in leadership development;
- Learning about and practicing specific leadership behaviors shown to facilitate exemplary leadership;
- Learning about and practicing skills that foster personal growth and leadership capacity, such mindfulness, emotional intelligence, psychological flexibility, and other skills;
- Learning about leadership careers in academia; and
- Self-assessments to assist participants in their leadership development.
Benefits to Faculty Participants
The program will be most beneficial to emerging faculty leaders with the following characteristics:
- Are interested in learning evidence-based leadership practices;
- Are interested in self-assessment of their leadership skills;
- Are interested in receiving one-on-one leadership advising;
- Are interested in developing a leadership or organizational goal and sharing it with others in the cohort;
- Are potentially interested in pursuing academic or other leadership opportunities; and
- Are available to attend most group meetings with other program participants.
