Joseph Schlenoff awarded Gutenberg Chair at Université de Strasbourg

Joseph Schlenoff, Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been awarded a 2011 Gutenberg Chair at the University of Strasbourg in France.

The Gutenberg Chair is awarded annually to promote international research collaborations with scientists at the University of Strasbourg, the largest University in France with 43,000 students and 4,000 researchers. Schlenoff will collaborate with research groups at the Medical School, at CNRS (a national laboratory) and at the School of Pharmacy. The Chair also supports a postdoctoral associate and a graduate student working in Strasbourg. The team will be developing a type of biomaterial, discovered by Schlenoff’s group at FSU, that can be used in implants for the extended release of pharmacologically active molecules. Schlenoff, who holds 20 issued and many pending patents, is a leading scientist in the field of water-soluble polymers and biocompatible polymer composites and blends.

Daniel Mears receives NCCD PASS Award

Daniel Mears has received the PASS (Prevention for a Safer Society) Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency for his book, American Criminal Justice Policy. NCCD established the PASS Awards to recognize and honor the media’s success in illuminating stories that further public understanding of criminal justice, juvenile justice, and child welfare issues. Martell Teasley wins the Gary Lee Shaffer Award

Martell Teasley has won the Gary Lee Shaffer Award for Academic Contributions to the Field of School Social Work. This award is presented by the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) at the national conference which will be held in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Clifton Callender receives the David Kraehenbuehl Prize

Clifton Callender has received the David Kraehenbuehl Prize, awarded by the Journal of Music Theory (JMT). This prize is given for an article judged the journal’s best submission from a not-yet-tenured scholar.

Dean Falk interviewed by Universität Zürich

While in Zurich recently, Dean Falk was interviewed by Universität Zürich regarding her book, Finding Our Tongues, which was released in German in 2010. There is a video of the interview available in English, as well as an article in German. Dean Falk is one of many FSU authors who had successful publications this year. Patricia Warren awarded McKnight Junior Faculty Development Fellowship

Patricia Warren, Professor of Criminology, has been awarded a McKnight Junior Faculty Development Fellowship for 2010-2011. This fellowship comes with a $15,000 award. The purpose of the fellowship is to give under-represented groups a year long research leave with the purposes of focusing on research in order
to promote and encourage promotion and tenure. Please also see the Statement of Purpose provided by Dr. Warren.

NSF selects two FSU faculty for CAREER awards

Rafe Blaufarb wins Koren Prize

Rafe Blaufarb, Director of the Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution at FSU, has won the 2010 Koren Prize. This prize is presented annually by the Society for French Historical Studies for the best article in English published in a U.S., Canadian, or European journal.

NSF select four FSU faculty for CAREER awards

Sachin Shanbhag, Oskar Vafek, Karen McGinnis, and Michael Shatruk have been selected by the National Science Foundation to receive CAREER awards. The award is given "in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations."
