The topic for this spring’s series, “Why We Still Teach,” will be discussed by four distinguished and nationally recognized faculty members from Florida State. Amid years of university budget cuts, constant concerns about a faculty “brain drain,” and changing ideas about the purpose of higher education, the speakers will talk about why they still love working with students and sharing their knowledge and experiences in the fields they have made their life’s work.

Michael Mascagni selected as ACM Distinguished Scientist

Michael Mascagni, professor of Computer Science, has been selected as an Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Distinguished Scientist. According to Sam Huckaba, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, "The Distinguished Member Grade recognizes those ACM members with at least 15 years of professional experience and 5 years of continuous Professional Membership who have achieved significant accomplishments or have made a significant impact on the computing field."

Kay Pasley receives Felix Berardo Award

Kay Pasley, Department Chair of Family and Child Sciences and Norejane Hendrickson Professor, has received the Felix Berardo Scholarship Award for Mentoring. This award is presented by the National Council on Family Relations. Please see the NCFR announcement for more information.

Ted Baker named IEEE Fellow

Ted Baker, professor of Computer Science, has been selected as an IEEE Fellow "for contributions to real-time computing applications." According to the IEEE website, "IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation." Lisa Waxman named in Most Admired Educators of 2012

Lisa Waxman, professor of Interior Design, has been chosen as 1 of the 25 Most Admired Educators of 2012. According to the Chair of Interior Design, Eric A. Wiedegreen, "Of the top 25 only 5 were interior design educators (the rest being from architecture, landscape architecture or industrial design.)"

ACPA selects Emerging Scholar and Senior Scholar

The ACPA (American College Personnel Association) has recently recognized two College of Education faculty members. Shouping Hu, Professor of Higher Education, was selected as a Senior Scholar. Kathy Guthrie, Assistant Professor of Higher Education, was chosen as an Emerging Scholar. Stephanie Leitch receives Roland H. Bainton Prize

Stephanie Leitch, associate professor in Art History, has received the Roland H. Bainton Prize for Art History for her book, Mapping Ethnography in Early Modern Germany: New Worlds in Print Culture. This award is presented annually by the Sixteenth Century Society for "the best books written in English dealing with three categories within the time frame of 1450-1660: Art and Music History, History/Theology, and Literature."

Christie Koontz wins IFLA Scroll of Appreciation

Christie Koontz, associate in Information Studies, has been awarded the 2011 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Scroll of Appreciation. This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated distinguished service to IFLA. "In making its decision, the Executive Committee awarded the Scroll to Dr. Koontz based upon her professional activities and service to the Management and Marketing Section from 1999-2011. Considered were not only length and consistency of service but the nature and significance of same, which included educational programs and pre-conferences conducted and developed for librarians in over a dozen countries; a marketing glossary translated into eight languages; an international and funded marketing award now in its tenth year; service as information coordinator for the section; and dozens of books, chapters and articles."

David Whalley named Fulbright Distinguished Chair

David Whalley, chair of Computer Science, has been named as a 2011 Fulbright Distinguished Chair. He will be traveling to Gothenburg, Sweden to work at Chalmers University of Technology where he will be working with faculty to research battery power conservation.
