Reminders for New Faculty

Orientation and Insurance & Benefits Enrollment for New Faculty

The Office of the Vice President for Faculty Development and Advancement will be hosting the New Faculty Orientation for faculty on Monday, August 21, 2017 and Tuesday, August 22, 2017. Further information will be distributed to deans and directors. New Faculty may sign up for benefits by attending one of two Benefits orientation sessions to be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and Wednesday, August 16, 2017, from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm at the FSU Training Center.

In order for new faculty with a Monday, August 7, 2017, hire date to have a September 1 health insurance coverage effective date, their appointment must be in the OMNI system and in the People First system. The benefit enrollment must be done online/by phone with People First by Monday, August 28, 2017, otherwise, an October 1 effective date will apply. Faculty members must send a personal check to People First if they elect a September 1 health insurance coverage date. The new faculty member will not be covered for the month of August unless they request COBRA from their prior employer or obtain their own insurance. The earliest supplemental insurance (i.e., dental) effective date is October 1. For more information, email the Benefits Office at

Insurance Programs Deadline

New faculty members have only 60 days from the beginning date of their appointment to enroll in health, life, and supplemental insurance programs. People First enforces this rule. The next opportunity for insurance enrollment is during the annual Open Enrollment period in October which has an effective date of January 1.

Important Faculty Retirement Deadline

All new faculty members must choose 1 of 3 retirement plans [Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), Florida Retirement System Pension (FRS) Plan, Florida Retirement System (FRS) Investment Plan]. Failure to select an annuity company within the first 90 days of employment will result in automatic enrollment in the FRS Pension Plan, according to Section 121.35, Florida Statutes.

Additionally, new faculty members have until the end of the fifth month following their hire date to choose the FRS Investment Plan. Once a faculty member is enrolled in one of the FRS Plans, the faculty member will have one life-time switch to change between the FRS Plans at any point in their career with an FRS employer. For more information about retirement choices, email the benefits office at
