Early Career Development

Welcome to Florida State University! We are so happy to have you working with us and want to provide effective and comprehensive career development in each stage of your career. In this first stage, the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement offers support in developing a professional community and establishing healthy, sustainable work habits. You will find our faculty writing groups, faculty accountability groups, NCFDD webinars, and New Faculty Development Deep Dive Canvas course provide ways to think about, discuss, and practice networking, relationship building, and healthy, productive work.

Early career scholars have partners across campus to help integrate them into work at FSU. You should expect your department and college to provide clear promotion and/or tenure standards and appoint for you at least one FSU mentor. The Office of Research Development offers support in grant research, application, and administration. The Center for the Advancement of Teaching offers personalized classroom observation and evaluation upon request, as well as numerous workshops on syllabus development. The Council for Research and Creativity will work with you on your application for a FYAP grant.

Accountability Groups
At FSU, Affinity Groups are considered tools for strengthening diversity and inclusion and are therefore primarily supported by the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The D&I website offers this description: “Affinity Groups are voluntary associations comprised of Faculty and Staff who have common interests. They play a vital role in articulating, promoting and supporting the needs and goals of their various communities and organizations. Their primary focus is to develop and improve the campus climate by increasing the presence of diverse faculty and staff.”

There is a specific call in 2021-22 for faculty and staff interested in supporting the formation of an Affinity Group for those with Native American/Indigenous identities and an Affinity Group for persons with disabilities. If you are interested in helping build either group, please contact the EDI office at agrier@fsu.edu.

To learn more about joining an established Affinity Group or forming an Affinity Group not mentioned above, visit https://diversity.fsu.edu/get-involved/affinity-groups.
