Kevin Fenton named Fulbright Specialist

Kevin Fenton

Kevin Fenton, professor of Music, has been named a Fulbright Specialist. Dr. Fenton will be working on his project, creating choral conducting curriculum, at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music. According to the proposal filed with CIES, "The purpose of this project is to develop a choral conducting curriculum that will enhance the choral activities in Kenya and will provide students with requisite skills for advanced study in choral conducting in the United States. There is a strong and rich history of singing throughout Kenya, which has been celebrated and enhanced by the work of the Kenya Conservatory of Music. As we plan for the future, we would like to address the growing interest in the study of the choral music of the United States. Because the vocal and rehearsal techniques required for the singing of anthems, spirituals and oratorios is different than the techniques used in Kenya, it is important to develop a curriculum that will provide students the tools needed to have positive experiences when singing music from the United States. Kevin Fenton has developed a sequential choral conducting curriculum that is effective for beginning through advanced conducting students and many of his students have gone on to be conducting teachers throughout the United States. The development of a choral conducting curriculum and the training of curriculum facilitators will provide a foundation that will allow future conservatory students to conduct high quality performances of choral music from the United States and will help prepare them for advanced study in choral conducting. Because Dr. Fenton has experience teaching beginning and advanced conducting and is a faculty member at an institution that grants terminal degrees in Choral Music Education and Choral Conducting, and because he is a leader in the American Choral Directors Association, he has knowledge of what is expected for advance study. in choral conducting in the United States."
